How can occupational therapy help?
Sometimes, your or your child is struggling, but it’s not always clear why. Maybe there is difficulty regulating emotions, big reactions, struggle with transitions, avoidance of certain activities, trouble with coordination, or an overwhelm with everyday demands.
Occupational therapy looks beyond the behavior to understand what support is needed — and helps to build the skills and confidence to participate in the things that matter most.
Occupational therapy is rooted in connection.
What does this process look like?
01
Consult
Before scheduling an evaluation, we will discuss your concerns to see if an occupational therapy evaluation is the right next step. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and determine if we are a good fit for each other. We will also discuss insurance benefits and/or payment options prior to scheduling.
02
Evaluation
During the evaluation process, we will use various methods, such as standardized assessments, clinical observations, review of medical/school records (if provided), and parent interview to gather a whole picture of your child. With this information, we will write up a report, treatment plan, and goals to work towards. We will go over all of this together to ensure that the goals align with your priorities as you are an essential member of your child’s care.
03
Treatment planning & initiation of therapy services
Therapy sessions are typically scheduled on a weekly basis and are approximately 30 minutes each, individually. Here we will work towards your child’s goals through play and therapeutic activities to make it a fun, welcoming environment. We will always remind you of what was worked on in therapy, and how you can carry over these skills at home.
Throughout treatment, your voice matters. You are your, or your child’s, biggest advocate.
My job is to work alongside you to determine the best path forward, whether that be editing goals to feel more aligned, altering treatment frequency, or working together with other providers and/or school-related personnel to have the greatest opportunity for carryover and progress.
